20/20: An exhibition of work by Allen Barker and Mike Roles
CLASH OF STYLE, CLASH OF AESTHETIC, STUNNING INSIGHT
- A COMPELLING EXHIBITION

After their successful 2004 show, 20/20 brings Allen Barker and Mike Roles together again at ArcArt. This time the show takes the form of a mini retrospective of work produced over the last two decades which focuses on the contrasts between the work of these two radically different artists in both their vision and their process.

Australian-born Allen Barker became deeply involved with colour field painting in the 70s, being at the forefront of its development in Britain. His use of colour, space, time and pure sensational form to create dynamic relationships across the two-dimensional surface of the picture plane has gently evolved and been exquisitely refined over the past twenty years. His work is in private, public and museum collections internationally.

"Pictures of this kind have to be exceptionally good to seize the attention, and Barker's works certainly do.” Arts Review

In strong contrast Mike Roles' work demonstrates his restless search for meaning. From his lyrical photo-sculptures of the "Loves and Vanities" series to the highly aggressive, broken, decaying figures of the "Third Millennium" body of work Roles' sculptures reflect his obsession with his own philosophical perspective on human existence.

This work has been widely exhibited both in Britain and abroad, always attracting applause and controversy in equal measure.

"‘Seated Nude'.... struck me as the most innovative piece of work since the 1940s, when the late Andy Warhol's can of Campbell's soup hit the entire art world between the eyes' Josef Gross, British Journal of Photography.

It is rare to see the work of two such contrasting contemporaries side by side. While offering a fascinating parallel of extremely different aesthetic concerns this comparing of styles generates a new form of energy by posing a refreshing set of questions as to the artists’ individual motivation. This show is a gem not to be missed.

Exhibition runs from 20th October until 10th November
Open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 2.00 - 5.00 or by appointment.
